Holi Top tips:

  • Traditionally, participants wear white clothing to the event, so that you can come out covered in colour.
  • Please be aware, there is a risk of staining to your clothes, we recommend that you wear old clothes to the event, in case they become stained.
  • Please remember to bring a change of clothes with you for after the event.
  • We recommend that you wear sunglasses or other eye protection during the event as the powder may cause eye irritation if it comes in contact with your eyes.
  • There will be designated toilet cubicles in the Oculus, which will be available for Colour Party participants to change their clothes.
  • Playing Holi is a bit like a snowball fight in the UK – anyone can play with anyone, so don’t be offended if someone throws colour powder towards you during the event. The saying “Bura na maano, Holi hai” may be heard during the event – it means “don’t take offence, it’s [for] Holi”.

The meaning behind Holi:

Holi is the Hindu celebration to welcome spring. It is commonly known around the world for the activity of colouring each other’s skin with different coloured powders.

One of the Holi myths tells of Hindu deities Radha and Krishna. Krishna (who has blue skin) fell in love with Radha, but was worried their difference in skin colour would keep them apart. His mother encouraged Krishna to ask Radha to paint his face any colour she liked, to make him less self-conscious of his blue skin.

There are two slight variations on whether Krishna painted Radha’s face in mischief or whether he got Radha to paint his face, but that’s the story of how this tradition came about.
