Come see A Silent Voice presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!
In this delicate screen adaptation of Yoshitoki Oima’s award-winning manga, Naoko Yamada constructs a nuanced and sensitive look at the trademarks of puberty. Narcissism, self-loathing, secret crushes and longing for acceptance manifest when a hearing-impaired girl starts at school. Explored through the perspective of the bully, this film tackles the subject of school bullying in a fresh and engaging style, encouraging us to sympathise with the protagonist even while understanding that their behaviour is inexcusable.
Tracking the journey towards empathy and understanding by the protagonist, Shoya, A Silent Voice explores the psychological effect of bullying on both the victim and the bully, with the motif of deafness and silence becoming a metaphor for the social isolation and miscommunication that so often accompanies adolescence.
