Come see The Devil's Backbone presented with stunning 4k laser projection on the big screen in L3!
A lesser-seen, earlier work of the renowned director Guillermo Del Toro, this is very much deserving of a greater place in the conversation of his filmography. A ghost story set in a remote orphanage during the dying days of the Spanish Civil War, this is a fascinating, haunting parable for the cruelties of fascism and specifically Franco-era Spain. Full of gothic intrigue and lingering images of a world outside our own, The Devil’s Backbone is a reflective, rare example of a master filmmaker still working near their best in their early career. If it is very much a blueprint for the symbolism-laden fantasy world of Pan’s Labyrinth, this remains an early display of directorial excellence, with a brilliant finale. This is very rarely screened in cinemas, so it’ll be a treat to see it in L3. [Ollie Lambert]
