L3

Come see The Favourite presented with stunning 4k laser projection on the big screen in L3!

Yorgos Lanthimos’ first period film, first collaboration with Emma Stone and first Oscar win for Olivia Colman defines The Favourite as a film of firsts. The film is bold and unconventional in its approach to the period genre, injecting a sense of modernity through language and costume design. The cinematography is brilliant and the performances from the three leading ladies are all fantastic. The story follows Abigail (Stone) as she arrives at the court of Queen Anne (Colman) searching for work, and her plan to rise the ranks and become closer to the frail queen. Abigail’s estranged cousin, Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) has her position as Queen Anne's confidante, advisor and lover threatened by her scheming cousin, and chaos ensues. This film is an absolute romp that definitely cannot be missed! It truly is a modern classic and the sapphic love triangle has potential real life validity. We thought The Favourite would be a good choice for our LGBTQ+ History Month programme, with its unique, crude and bold portrayal of female desire and power dynamics in 18th century England.
