When I hear a book I love is being adapted into a movie I always am sceptical. I was especially so when Project Hail Mary was announced; its space setting and, without saying too much, abstract concepts made me worry the visuals were going to be less than adequate for such an amazing story. After watching the film I can confidently say that this is one of those adaptations that does its source material an immeasurable amount of justice! Ryan Gosling did an amazing job as main character Dr. Ryland Grace, a science teacher who finds himself on a space craft headed towards star Tau Ceti with no recollection of how he got there or what the purpose of the trip is. The film then uses flashbacks to show us the timeline of events leading up to Grace’s present situation, almost as if we’re recalling it with him. I have only positive things to say about this film with not one complaint of pacing or special effects which is a feat considering the amount used, and easily poorly done, in the sci-fi genre. I will always sing this story’s praises and could have easily watched another hour on top of the 2.5 hour run time with all the little details from the book. If you haven’t already, or have and like me would digest anything Andy Weir’s had his hands on 10 times over, I would highly recommend coming along and watching! [Victoria Beaumont]
