What are Alternative Proteins?

Event from Alternative Protein Project

Wednesday 30 September 2026, 7.00PM - Wednesday 30 September 2026, 8.00PM

S0.20 (Social Sciences North and South, Ground Floor)

How will we feed 10 billion people by 2050? Billions of people worldwide love meat and want to eat more of it. But simply scaling up business-as-usual meat production is incompatible with meeting the world's climate, biodiversity, public health, and food security goals over the next two critical decades.
Many interventions will be needed, but a transition toward alternative proteins—made from plants, cultivated from animal cells, or produced via fermentation—is among the few that can scale to meet meat demand. Such a transition can cut emissions, feed more people with fewer resources, reduce antibiotic use in our food system, and free up land and water for conservation.
